Intensive Physiotherapy - An alternative treatment? [LISTEN]

Michael Grevitt and Stewart Tucker both agree that physiotherapy can have a role to play in the treatment of scoliosis. There is universal agreement that it can be helpful in pain relief and strengthening core and back muscles.

Many parents, as they scrabble around for treatment options, can be attracted to intensive physiotherapy. It is not available on the NHS and therefore must be paid for privately. There are some private physiotherapy groups and providers of other alternative medical practices that promote intensive physiotherapy as a viable alternative to surgery.

Intensive and ongoing physiotherapy can be a valuable palliative. In mild cases or where the need for surgery could be a marginal decision, it can help avoid the need for surgery. However, put against traditional surgery it comes with an ongoing cost in terms of money, time and possibly ongoing pain. For some, it is a bargain they are prepared to accept.

Erika Maude, Founder and Principal of Scoliosis SOS Clinic, explains the type of patients the clinic treats.

Stewart Tucker, a leading spinal consultant, explains why parents need to be cautious of information they read online.
