Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis affects young adolescents as they undergo the physical and psychological transition from being children to young adults. For many, it can be a challenging time as they form their own opinions and start to gain independence from their parents. Given the weight of a potentially serious medical condition, fear and psychological issues such as depression are not uncommon.
My personal way of dealing with scoliosis was to deny the problem existed. This is not unique and both Michael Grevitt and Stewart Tucker had made a point of some of the challenges of dealing with adolescents. After time I refused to wear my brace or actively engage with the physiotherapy that had been recommended.
Listen to Margaret Simpson, my mother, explain the frustration of not being able to get me to engage with the treatment options.
A lot has changed since I was diagnosed with scoliosis nearly a decade ago. The major benefit that Eilish had was the existence of Facebook support pages. Regardless of whether you accept the established conventional treatment options or wish to explore alternate options there will be members willing to share their experience.
Listen to Eilish explain the importance of support pages.
