As a result of the lockdown, the assignment brief was amended to allow students to interview relatives but only when relevant to the story. My parents are relevant to Back Story and I decided, in agreement with my supervisor, to use them as contributors. I know they will give my audience the best insight and guidance possible. Diagnosis - From a parents perspective.
It was a strange experience interviewing my parents. Looking back the effect on them as a result of my condition was as great as the effect on me but just in a different way. I suppose, if you don’t look back on your childhood and think you didn’t have the best parents, then you have been unlucky. In my case I have been lucky.
Also, part of growing up is coming to appreciate that the world does not revolve around you. In my juvenile world my condition was all about me. Up until now I have never really considered how they felt. It was an interesting experience both for me and hopefully my audience.
This was also my only opportunity in this project to be able to do an in-person interview and use a digital recording microphone.
